Beginning in May, Dolores Chili will launch its first-ever Dolores Chili Truck. The mobile restaurant will offer chili lovers and newcomers alike free tastings of Dolores Chili. Dolores’ famous blend will come served in a cup or with other food-truck favorites such as Chili Fries, Chili Dogs, Chili Nachos, Chili Tamales, and Chili Fritos®.

The truck will also carry Dolores merchandise such as Hats, T-Shirts, Sweatshirts, Jackets and Aprons. Chili fans will also be treated to such non-edible Dolores freebies as key chains, pens, lanyards and mouse pads.

The maiden voyage is set for the weekend of May 19th in LA. The truck will continue to deliver L.A.’s Favorite Chili to a different spot or several each weekend, from Friday through Sunday.

Be on the lookout for the Dolores Chili Truck wherever hungry people are found: parking lots, at carnivals and festivals, soccer matches, football games, Chili Cook-Offs or Food Truck events.

The company also plans to promote Dolores Chili by bringing its food truck to the parking lot of retailers that currently carry it’s well known product, the Chili Brick.

The Dolores Chili Truck will be stocked with a refreshing selection of soft drinks, energy drinks and bottled water. Dolores’ classic 20-ounce Frozen Chili Bricks will also be available for purchase.

Originally founded in 1954 as a distributor of beef and pork products, the Los Angeles-based Dolores Canning Company is a family affair. Patriarch Basilio Muñoz started the processing plant, with matriarch Dolores as the face of the company.

With a nod to its shape, chili lovers have enjoyed the aptly named Chili Brick since its introduction in 1973. To this day, Dolores is famous for its beef and chicken brick-shaped chili. The frozen chili is sold throughout the Western United States in countless retail supermarkets.

In Los Angeles, Dolores Chili is served at Philippe The Original in downtown and is the base for many restaurants’ chili throughout the region. Consumers can purchase a Dolores “Pepper Belly,” featuring the flavorful taste consumers have come to expect from Dolores, for $1.50 at select Superior Grocer outlets.

Many know “Pepper Bellies” from little league and football snack bars, however Superior has added more excitement by serving a generous scoop of Dolores Chili over a 1 oz. bag of corn chips. Superior and Dolores will also be adding Chili Nachos, Chili Fries and Chili Dogs to the line-up very soon.

Superior Grocers has been a long-time retailer of Dolores Chili, and has just recently added the company’s new Chicken Chili Brick® to all of their 40 locations. Now Chili fans can buy the Original Beef Chili or the New Chicken Chili in the Meat Department for $4.99 per 20 oz. tray.

“Dolores Chili fans have enjoyed Dolores Chili over chips, Chili Cheese Nachos, Chili Dogs or Chili Fries for years, and now they can get them right here in the grocery store, so we’re very excited about serving our Dolores Chili in stores,” said Dolores president David Muñoz. “This is an opportunity for people to learn new ways to enjoy our chili.”

In a store made famous for value and variety, “L.A.’s Favorite Chili” is a natural fit.

Los Angeles-based Dolores Canning Co. Inc is introducing a 7-ounce package of Dolores Chili Sauce, available exclusively at 99 Cents Only Stores in four states. The new sauce, packed into individual microwave-friendly servings, retains the same great flavor that made Dolores Chili famous. It will be sold at all 300 99 Cents Only Stores in California, Nevada, Arizona and Texas.

“Dolores Chili Sauce is another way for people to enjoy a single-serving of Dolores Chili. It’s perfect with dogs, burgers, fries, nachos or straight,” said Dolores president David Muñoz.

The microwave-safe sauce, which heats in less than a minute, arrives at a perfect time. As savvy consumers become more time- and budget-conscious in their search for quality, discount retailers like 99 Cents Only Stores have surged in popularity.

In January 2011, Time magazine reported that bargain hunting has expanded its popularity to middle-class households. According to another report, there were fewer than 6,000 dollar stores in the U.S. as recently as 1996; by May 2011 the country’s three largest dollar stores had more than 20,000 outlets.

Founded in 1982, 99 Cents Only was an early innovator of the bargain retail concept. For more than 25 years, everything was priced at 99 cents. Due to rising costs, the top price of its goods eventually increased to 99.99 cents.

Dolores Chili and 99 Cents Only Stores are a logical match, since the chili has built its reputation on value in addition to flavor. A 20-ounce all-beef brick of Dolores Chili serves four to five, and varies in price between $4 and $5, depending on the retailer.

The chicken chili consists of the same family recipe and spices, which made the beef chili famous, but includes all white chicken meat and has been described as a “healthier alternative.”

The 20 oz. Chicken Chili Brick is now available in 38 Southern California Superior Grocers locations across six counties in addition to the all-beef brick already on shelves at the retail outlet.

The price for one brick, which makes four to five servings, is $4.99.

Dolores Canning Co., the manufacturer of Dolores Chili, says the new relationship represents a potential to reach those consumers who prefer an alternative to beef.

“Our new Chicken Chili Brick is a great alternative for those who prefer chicken and it maintains a healthy balance.  Our new chili has low sodium, low cholesterol and absolutely no MSG,” said David Muñoz, Dolores Canning Co. president.

The Los Angeles-based chili maker has spent four decades building a following for the original all-beef Chili Brick that has long characterized the brand.

With the new chicken chili also comes a change to the packaging’s label. The Chicken Chili Brick has a lighter look, designed to make it easier for consumers to select their preferred brick and find the new product.

Dolores Chicken Chili debuted for the first time at limited Bristol Farms locations in early 2011. However, this time with 38 stores behind it, the item is sure to bring in new traffic.

The 20-ounce and five-pound packages of the original all-beef Dolores Chili Brick are currently sold in major grocery store chains such as Albertson’s, Food 4 Less, Vons, Ralphs and Smart & Final. It’s also featured on Philippe the Original’s (downtown L.A.) menu.

Tuesday, Jan. 31 marks the second annual “Free Chili Day,” at Philippe’s, sponsored by Dolores Chili.

“It’s a great opportunity for chili and French Dipped sandwich lovers to come together,” said Dolores president David Muñoz.

Philippe’s has been serving Dolores Chili for decades. Patrons can enjoy a cup or bowl of chili any day of the week topped with diced onions and/or shredded cheddar and a side of crackers for $2.20 a cup or $3.10 a bowl.

On “Free Chili Day” a purchased French Dipped Sandwich qualifies for a complimentary cup of chili with a voucher.

Only the first 500 to receive a voucher at either of Philippe’s entrances will get to participate. Vouchers start being handed out at 10:30 a.m. The chili supply won’t last longer than noon.

Last year 500 cups of Dolores Chili were given out in an hour and fifteen minutes.

“We anticipate great success again,” said Muñoz. “Get there early.”

In the past, Dolores Canning Co., the East Los Angeles-based manufacturer of Dolores Chili has sponsored the California State Chili Championship.

From 2010-2011, Dolores Chili also participated at off-road racing events, 5K and 10K runs, cook-offs, church fairs and cancer walks in LA, San Bernardino and Orange counties sampling the famous chili, demonstrating recipe preparation, and handing out promotional items.

During the remaining 2011 and into 2012, Dolores Chili is more aggressively hitting the streets. The calendar is filling up with more runs, walks, street fairs and various events.

At each event, Dolores Chili sets up a 10 x 10 booth and samples enough chili and promotional products for a single or multiple day gig.
